are you drinking your whisky from the right glass?

Updated: Feb 12, 2024

Have you ever wondered if you’re drinking your whisky from the right type of glass?

Whether you drink Scotch, Irish, Bourbon, Rye or Japanese whisky, there are 5 main types of glasses designed and dedicated to your favourite dark spirit.

Tumbler or Rocks Glass

The tumbler, also known as a rocks glass, is a short wide glass with a thick bottom. It’s a classic choice for enjoying your whisky with ice (on the rocks) or with a splash of water. The wide opening allows for easy nosing, and the sturdy design makes it suitable for casual sipping.

Glencairn Glass

The Glencairn Glass is a popular choice among whisky connoisseurs. It features a tulip shape with a narrow neck, concentrating the aromas towards the nose. The wide bowl allows for swirling and appreciating the colour, while the narrow opening captures and directs the scents for a more focused olfactory experience.

Copita Glass

Similar to the Glencairn, the Copita glass has a tulip shape, but with a longer stem. This design is often used in professional whisky tastings and takes its inspiration from the traditional sherry glass. The elongated stem allows the drinker to hold the glass without warming the contents and provides an elegant presentation.

Snifter Glass

Commonly associated with brandy, the snifter glass is also used for certain whiskies. It has a wide bowl and a short stem, allowing the drinker to ‘cup’ the glass and gently warm the whisky with their hands. The shape encourages the release of complex aromas, making it suitable for high-proof or aged whiskies.

whisky Highball Glass

Popular in Japan, the highball glass is tall and cylindrical, typically used for whisky cocktails like the classic highball or whisky and soda. Its design accommodates a generous amount of mixer while still showcasing the colour of whisky.

However, the bottom line is that you should drink your whisky in whichever glass that you like. There really isn’t a right or wrong.
