Blended malt whisky. 🥃 Not to be confused with blended whisky or single malt whisky. So, where does it fit? Somewhere in between. Sort of.

What is blended malt whisky?

Formerly known as ‘vatted malt’, blended malt whisky is made by blending two or more SINGLE MALT WHISKIES from different distilleries.

How is it different to blended whisky?
Â
Blended whisky is made from a blend of single malt whisky and GRAIN whisky from different distilleries.

Why blend malt whiskies together?
Â
The point of blended malt whisky is that each single malt component brings its own unique perspective to the blend, ultimately revealing a final product that can be greater than the sum of its parts.

How is blended malt whisky produced?

The chosen casks are mixed together in a blending vat, then returned to a finishing cask and left to marry for a period of many months before bottling.

Will it say on the label which single malt distilleries the blend has come from?

Sometimes but not always. Often the label will just stipulate that the whisky is a blend from particular regions. However, some whisky makers go a step further, and on their websites, give a full breakdown of all the single malts used and in what ratios per batch.

Who produces It?

Many independent bottlers produce blended malt whisky including Compass Box, Mossburn Distillers and Bottlers, Douglas Laing and William Grant & Son’s Monkey Shoulder.

What does it taste like?
Â
Encompasses a broad spectrum of flavours from vanilla and candied fruit; chocolate and spice; right the way through to a peaty campfire smokiness.

Is it worth trying?
Â
Yes. Blended malts may be at a slightly higher price point than their blended whisky cousins, but are known for being innovative and full of character and depth.

Best serve?
Â
Blended malt whiskies work very well mixed into cocktails but if you’d prefer to drink it neat. It’s up to you.
